Have used a couple of roof rakes over the years and this is the best yet. Most of them feel flimsy and flexible – it’s the nature of the beast – they must be to be lightweight. This works as well as any, and is priced fairly. AND…it is NOT made in China! Shipped quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great snow rake, February 1, 2011

Lazer Fers (New England, USA)

This review is from: Ames True Temper 1634500 Roof Snow Rake (Lawn & Patio)

I’ve had this hard to find item for the last month, throughout the blizzards of January of 2011, here in Connecticut. So far in one month I’ve had over 80 inches of snow in the NE hills. I couldn’t be more pleased with this item. I’ve used it dozens of times and dozens of hours. I’ve used it on snow from 4 inches to 24 inches and it never failed to amaze me at its performance.

Pros: Easy to assemble. Performs great. Very strong. With all extensions making it 16.5 feet long it will bow-out but is very capable of supporting the full length with no problems. If it were heavier in design it would be impossible to hold out at the full length.

Cons: None.

4.0 out of 5 stars light weight, capable but very bendy, January 29, 2011

Joe “Joe” (Massachusetts)

This review is from: Ames True Temper 1634500 Roof Snow Rake (Lawn & Patio)

I had about 2 feet of medium packed snow on the roof of my tall two story house. This roof rake with all extensions just barely touched the edge of the roof when I held it way up over my head. I needed to deal with the snow problem quick and no local stores had other roof rakes so I bought another identical roof rake and used the poles together. I was using up to six poles! It was very bendy. I could just barely raise it with four poles and then could add the others and needed to remove them before taking the rake down. It was an exercise in frustration and it was very hard to control, but I did get a lot of snow off the roof from way up high. I clearly pushed this product way above what it was designed to do and it did do the job. I think I will get another roof rake that is more heavy duty and is designed for 30 feet. If you have a one story house, I think you may be fine with this, but keep in mind it is not that long. Do your measurements first. If you have a two story…Read more

Hopkins 19520 Super Deluxe 22″ Snowbrush – Assorted Colors

This review is from: Hopkins 19520 Super Deluxe 22″ Snowbrush – Assorted Colors (Automotive)

Well, winter will be coming upon us, and rather than clean my car off with a magazine/modified cardboard box top, I thought a real snow/ice scraper would be handy. I wasn’t looking for anything fancy, just enough to get the job done decently. For under $4 and free S/H with a minimum Amazon order, I think this is a good deal.

The picture pretty much is it. The construction is pretty sturdy. The entire length is about 1’10″ and brush is just under 7″. The width of the ice scraper is about 4″. The handle is solid thick plastic with a hole at the top for easy hanging, though mine is going in the back of the car.

I did manage to crack the ice scraper at the very tip when testing out the “flexibility” of the scaper, but I do not think this should inhibit its functioning.

People who are very short/have short arms are probably not going to be able to clean off the top of the car or the middle of an SUV windshield very easily with this though.

The blade is no-stick because it is made out of plastic. It has a metal wear strip at the bottom to allow you to get under the ice and snow better. The term “graphite” refers to the color of the blade, as if anyone cares.

Very good angle for short (5’2″) older lady. Very strong edge- can chop through ice, and pushes loads nicely. Would buy 2 of these rather than the other more pricy aluminum flat blade regular shape shovel.

This shovel is defiantly a must have. It is so much easier on your back than a standard shovel. Don’t get me wrong. When you have to shovel 75 feet of driveway you can still get a little sore, but you’re not constantly bending over as with a straight shovel and killing your back. It works great when using it to push the snow to the side too and again that is easier than with a standard shovel. A big plus is that the snow – even wet snow – did not stick to the blade at all. I highly recommend this shovel.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program (What’s this?)

I’ve never owned a snow broom before. I excitedly tried this one out on my SUV tonight, and had mixed feelings:

THE GOOD:

It works very well to push large amounts of snow off cleanly– even did a better job than my usual brush, with much less effort.

THE BAD:

The locking mechanism and connection to the “broom.” My hands were very cold, which made it hard to screw on the foam “broom” to the handle, but I got it. Then I tried to pull out the telescoping handle, and couldn’t. I had to step on the foam and pull up on the handle. That worked. However, it wouldn’t stay locked in the “out” position. While I was pushing the snow around, the handle kept retracting. That would be pain enough, but here’s what was worse:

The handle ALSO kept unscrewing from the foam. The foam was actually spinning around in the wind. I couldn’t get it to stay securely on, even though I tightened it as far as it would go. The slightest movement made it loosen…Read more

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program (What’s this?)

We’ve had a couple of light snowfalls here in my corner of New England, and the Snow Joe Broom worked well at quickly removing the light accumulation from the roof, hood, and sides of my car.

I say “quickly”, because of the very large broom head –18″ long x 7″ wide. Also, the handle extends from 30″ to 49″, which made reaching across the roof easy.

Plus, the item is very light weight, making it easy to handle. (It weights just 1.2 pounds.) It is also simple to assemble and extend.

I haven’t yet tested the ice scraper, since there hasn’t been any icing around here yet (and hopefully, there won’t be ;>)

Despite the good performance I just wrote about, I had to give it just four stars, because I’m not sure of the durability of the styrofoam-like material that makes up the broom. It may very well hold up when the snow gets heavy and ice crusted, but I have some doubts about that. (I’ve bent metal shovels on the snow and ice in this neck of…Read more

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program (What’s this?)

I waited for actual snow before writing this review, it’s snowed about 3 inches so I unpackaged this unit donned my gloves and hat and set forth to clear my car. There are two clips on the unit where the handle is stored, unclipped the handle and adjusted for size. ( I have a small SUV) First setback was the units handle locking and unlocking system is tight and secure, really really tight and secure! After some grunting and twisting I got the thing set up. When tight, unlike the photo the scraper is at a 90 degree angle to the snow pusher ( more on this later). The foam snow pusher actually did a good job and cleared snow cleanly with no marring, it seemed to hold up to the usual edges and bumps from wipers, antennas, etc. and the length made the job quick.

After snow removal I used the scraper end to get the light coat of ice off the windows. Because the foam pusher end is at 90 degrees to the scraper you end up trying to manage scraping with a wet 18 inch or so pusher…Read more

So the shovel is my go-to shovel to spot clean snow and especially good at scrapping to the pavement to clear the walks. It’s a bit short I think for my height, but then again I am 6′ 2″. It fits perfect for my wife though. Very lightweight, almost so that I thought it would be too cheap to use, but its just the light weight material used despite a steel core in the handle. Very lightweight for throwing snow. Received it with shipping included. Where I live, I could not find a decent shovel. If your going to clean a large surface area, you probably need a wide shovel as well as this one for spot cleaning and when you need something very easy to handle. I would think this shovel would be good for seniors too even without the fancy curved handle.

I had purchased a Hopkins extendable snowbrush to help get the snow off the roof of my SUV. It worked so well that I decided to get one for my car as well. The pivoting brush head makes it easy to push or pull snow off the flat surfaces of the vehicle. I also got to use the more aggressive ice scraper to get 1/4″ thick freezing rain off the windows. It worked very well. The extension feature is quite handy. It allows you extra reach on an SUV or truck, but yet collapses down to a manageable size for storage. I would recommend this product if you need the extra reach to clear off larger vehicles, or need the stout ice scraper for freezing rain.

This would work well for those in the Panhandle of Texas, Oklahoma, and other states where snow and ice are the exception.

Pros:
Expandable, makes it good for SUV’s
Good for medium frost
Water wiper is good for clearing windshield at the carwash.

Cons:
The snow brush part is horrible.

Overall this seems to be a well made tool. I have not had any ice since I got this two days ago but in checking it out, the head has a good positive lock in all positions as well as the extending handle. I have a Dodge Ram 1500 4X4 and I’m a little height challenged so getting the back window (no rear window defroster) free of water and ice before I leave for work can be a pain. For that purpose this provides a great reach extender for me. The main reason I only gave 4 stars though is that I was truly looking for an all weather tool and this is only almost. This is plaiinly great for the frost, ice and snow side of the house. My problem is that the day after I got it, it rained overnight and I thought, “Great, I can try the water side first” walked out to my truck and was immediately disappointed in the performance of the squeegee end of things. The rubber squeegee blade is so hard that it also would be better used as an ice scraper. On a very slightly curved surface like my rear…Read more

This is the first ice melting product I have ever purchased. After plowing through 7 ft of snow on my 100 ft driveway using my Green Works snow blower (which works great, BTW), I spread a generous layer of these pellets on the residual icy snow at the bottom. Within the next couple of hours, I had the cleanest looking driveway on my street. I did not have any refreezing issues overnight. I am not sure how careful I need to be about keeping the box tightly closed. It has been open most of the time in my outdoor garage and I have had no issues. Now I have half a mind to throw some of these guys up on the roof and in the gutters.

Update: second winter with same bucket
Just finished the remainder of the same bucket after today’s 3 inches of Chicagoland snow. It still works well enough after an year.

Sheldon – See all my reviews

This review is from: Snow Wolf SW0310 Wheeled Snow Shovel (Lawn & Patio)

Today’s 8″ storm officially heralded in my second season using the Wovel, and I was reminded exactly how remarkable this silly-looking contraption is.

My house is one of four homes on a very small private street. Since we’re responsible for our own snow removal, we co-own a large snow blower and take turns clearing the street. My three neighbors also use the blower to clear their driveways. As for myself, I don’t particularly like the loud, polluting blower. Since I’ve always looked at shoveling as excellent exercise, I would typically reach for the shovel to handle my own driveway.

Although I’m pretty fit, I do suffer from occasional acute lower back episodes. For this reason, my wife picked up a Wovel as a holiday gift for me last season.

The first time I used it, I was amazed at how large a swath of 8″ deep snow I could clear with a single scoop. I estimated at that time that the volume of snow I was clearing with one Wovel scoop was…Read more

This review is from: Snow Wolf SW0310 Wheeled Snow Shovel (Lawn & Patio)

Pros:
The Wovel makes for fast, easy and efficient removal of snow. I can clear my drive faster with the Wovel than my neighbors can using their snow blowers (and it seems that they work harder trying, wrestling their snow blowers!). The folding design of the Sno Wovel is wonderful! It only takes a minute for me to disassemble and hang on my garage wall (so it also saves floor space over a snow blower). It works so well that I’ve started letting my 6 year old daughter clear away light snow (1-2″).

Cons:
While clearing some snow I hit a patch of ice, that unfortunately has chipped a 2″ chunk out of the middle of the shovel. This has also caused a 2-3″ vertical crack. I would definitely recommend buying the available wear strip, which in my opinion should have been included with the shovel by the manufacturer. Very disappointingly, Structured Solutions II does not sell any accessories on Amazon so I would have incurred additional shipping costs buying the…Read more

This review is from: Snow Wolf SW0310 Wheeled Snow Shovel (Lawn & Patio)

The wovel comes together remarkably easily. The included instructions (with additional installation tips on DVD) are accurate and thorough. It’s an easy, one man job requiring only a screwdriver and crecent wrench. All items were clearly indicated, making it the easiest “some assembly required” experience I’ve had. The parts are well made and tight fitting. I anticipate it to last many years with proper care.

After finishing my initial run with the Wovel there were three primary things that were very clear to me.

First, which was a shock for me, was the fact that it could forward plow in a single pass every bit as much snow as the big scoop shovel I’d previously used–quite possibly more. I expected it to be quite the opposite. The Wovel blades vertical orientation, allows it to move a great deal of snow at a time with less snow spilled over the sides than I’m accustomed to. This translates to far less going back over already cleared parts afterwards to…Read more

Handles Big Driveways and Heavy Snowfalls
Behind the Snow Joe SJM988′s dependable performance is a powerful 13-1/2 amp motor, which allows it to move up to 650 pounds of snow per minute. Built to help you clear walkways, patios, and driveways quickly and without straining your back, the SJM988 utilizes a heavy-grade steel, four-blade rotor, and can throw snow up to 20 feet. You don’t have to worry about moving the same snow twice, even when clearing the middle of your driveway.

With each pass, the SJM988 cuts a path that’s a full 18 inches wide and 10 inches deep, and the snow thrower’s scraper is designed to clear all the snow down to the pavement. This translates to an impressive 2,450 square feet of potential snow removal per hour.

Because winter days are short, the SJM988 also features a bright, 20-watt halogen light to make early-morning or late-night clearing operations a little more convenient and safer.

Smart Details Keep You in Control
With an adjustable discharge chute, which rotates a complete 180 degrees, and a chute deflector that can be adjusted to control the height of the snow stream produced by the thrower, you have complete control over where the snow you move ends up.

And the body of the SJM988 is easy to maneuver and control. Compact, easy-glide, pivot wheels make it easy to turn the snow thrower at the end of each pass, while the thrower’s ergonomic grips make it easy and comfortable to direct. In addition to making handling easier, the thrower’s compact shape also makes storing the unit more convenient in between winter storms.

Electric Engine is Easy to Start and Maintain
The SJM988′s corded electric design means that you never have to worry about dead batteries, running out of gas, or making the right gas-oil mix. And its electric engine doesn’t require the costly regular maintenance of a combustion engine.

In addition, with push-button Instant Start technology, you can trust that this snow thrower will be ready to work whenever you are–no frustrating, arm-wrenching pull starts required.

Bought the model SJ621 a few weeks back at a big box club store as Amazon wasn’t carrying the Snow Joe with a headlight.

First used this little fellow a couple days after receiving it on about 6″ of wet, early season snow.

The Snow Joe did OK in clearing our driveway. It is a little small (18″ width), which means you’ll have to make more passes, and since it’s electric, you might have to “double-pump” a bit, as in make a pass then make another one immediately afterwards.

Our snow was pretty wet, especially close to the driveway, so Little Snow Joe only threw it 10′ at most, but using my head I was able to clear our 60×80′ driveway in just under an hour. I’d imagine it will do better with drier snow.

Of course I had to go around after the Snow Joe with a shovel to clean up, but that’s to be expected.

I wouldn’t try wet snow any deeper than 6″…this morning I could tell this little guy was straining…this means any larger storms…Read more

Customer Video Review Length:: 4:54 MinsFor anyone who doubts that this snowblower can handle knee-deep snow, here is the proof. I bought this unit primarily to clear my decks. You do have to muscle it through the snow, as it is not self propelled, but it is still WAY easier than trying to shovel it over or under the railings. My wife recorded this from inside the house so you really can’t hear the sound of the machine much. Also, I was trying to turn the light on just to demonstrate it, but I think it was too bright out to see it. It works well at night.
